If you’ve ever thought, “I wish we had talked about this sooner,” then this guide is for you. Here’s a simple, structured way to design a relationship—whether with a partner, a colleague, or a team.
The Conversation (60 minutes total):
1. Opening (5 min) – Set the stage. “I’d like us to talk about how we want to work/live together so things are smoother and clearer.”
2. Intentions (10 min) – Each person shares: “What do I want from this relationship? What matters most to me?”
3. Needs & Preferences (15 min) – Explore what helps each person thrive: communication styles, boundaries, support.
4. Handling Challenges (15 min) – Agree in advance: “When we hit a conflict, how do we want to reset?”
5. Agreements (10 min) – Summarize what you’ve decided into 3–5 clear, shared commitments.
6. Closing (5 min) – Appreciate the process. “I feel more connected/clear after this.”

''A simple design conversation today saves countless conflicts tomorrow.”
Conversation Starters:
- “What helps you feel supported?”
- “How do you like to receive feedback?”
- “What throws you off in communication—and how can we prevent it?”
- “When conflict happens, what’s the best way to reset?”
Homework:
Each person writes down one concrete action they’ll take in the next week to honor the design. At the next check-in, revisit: What worked? What needs adjusting?
This isn’t a one-off—it’s a living design. Revisit it regularly, just as described in earlier posts. The more you refine it, the stronger the relationship grows.
